The greatest moment of David Tyree's seven-year NFL career is his acrobatic 32-yard catch against Rodney Harrison in Super Bowl XLII (above). Tyree played in Baltimore last season.
David Tyree, one of the heroes of Super Bowl XLII, has re-signed with the Giants so he can officially announce his retirement with his hometown team. The 30-year-old Tyree is hanging up his cleats after a seven-year NFL career that included six seasons with the Giants. He was an outstanding special teams player for most of his time in New York, even making the Pro Bowl at that position in 2005. However, he will best be remembered, of course, for the remarkable, one-handed, helmet-aided catch he made during the final drive of Super Bowl XLII. It is widely considered the greatest catch in Super Bowl history, and it turned him from a respected role player to a legend in Giants lore. Tyree has known for a while that his career was over. Injuries kept him out of the entire 2008 season and robbed him of a chance to take a bow for his Super Bowl achievement in front of Giants fans. He was released by the team the following summer and signed with the Baltimore Ravens. He played in 10 games for them in 2009 but didn't make a single catch. He hinted at his retirement during a visit to the Giants' locker room back in June - his first trip back there since he was cut. And he made it clear then that whenever he did decide to leave, he wanted to retire as a Giant. "At the end of the day, I'm a Giant," he said. "My greatest moments have been here. My greatest memories are here. I don't know if I've quite reached that status to sign a one-day deal. When I decide, I'll make the world know that I'm a Giant. There's no qualms about that." Tyree, a New Jersey native who grew up in Montclair, caught 54 passes for 650 yards in his time with the Giants after they drafted him out of Syracuse in the sixth round of the 2003 draft. His biggest game, of course, was his three-catch, 43-yard, one-touchdown performance in the Super Bowl when the Giants beat the previously undefeated Patriots, 17-14. Tyree, who for the next few hours will be the 80th man on the Giants' roster, will officially announce his retirement on a conference call Friday at 10 a.m.
