'The Clash of the Titans,' starring Sam Worthington, is out on DVD this week.
Popcorn movies are best seen on the big screen, especially when we're talking about an effects-driven epic like "Clash of the Titans" (PG-13, $28.98). But if you're in the mood for giant scorpions and scenery chewing from highbrow actors like Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, it's definitely worth a rental. You won't be eating much popcorn -- or anything else -- if you choose the unapologetically grisly "Repo Men" (R, $29.98) instead: Jude Law and Forest Whitaker don't repossess people's cars or houses, but their internal organs. There's also plenty of gore in the creatively-cast "Operation: Endgame" (R, $29.97), in which assassins like Rob Corddry, Zach Galifianakis, and Maggie Q attempt to terminate each other by any means possible. For something a little different, consider Hong Kong's action-heavy "Ip Man" (R, $19.98), about Bruce Lee's martial arts master. It's coming straight to DVD in the U.S. but was such a huge success in Asia that the sequel (also a smash) was released a few months ago. There are several arthouse options as well, including the critically adored "Secret of the Grain" (NR, $39.95), about the intertwined lives of Arab immigrants in the South of France. "Vincere" (R, $24.98), which finds new facets in the story of Benito Mussolini, was also much acclaimed, as was "The Art of the Steal" (NR, $24.98), about unexpected intrigues gripping Philadelphia's tony art world. Noir fans will want to stick to the vaults this week, with titles like 1950's "Dark City" (NR, $24.95), one of Charlton Heston's earliest films, and "Union Station" (NR, $24.95), in which William Holden races to solve a kidnapping. And don't overlook the surprisingly impactful revenge Western "Hannie Caulder" (R, $24.95), starring a fierce Raquel Welch, or the 1965 sci-fi thriller "Crack in the World" (NR, $24.95). Moving on to television, now's your chance to discover the allure of "Pawn Stars" (NR, $19.95), thanks to the newly-released second season. There's more--or perhaps less--reality in "The City: Season 2" (NR, $24.95). Tom Selleck's mustache returns (with a goatee!) for "Jesse Stone: No Remorse" (NR, $24.95), and sci-fi fans can get excited about "Stargate Universe SG-U: 1.5 (NR, $29.98). Then, of course, there will be those who plan to spend the entire week holed up with "21 Jump Street: The Complete Series" (NR, $69.98). A little tip to save you some time: Johnny Depp dropped out after season four.
